A Dream of Flying Became My Latest Music finished on 2014 Chinese New Year's Eve (LISTEN ONLINE)
Happy Chinese New Year! I was lucky enough to finish the first music composition of the year 2014 on the Chinese New Year eve (Jan 30th 2014). It took me two weeks to complete my new music piece “Flying High Above”.
Listen online:
Actually the general plot of this piece is to express that when you soar high, you are able to overlook everything and see mountains, rivers and people below. You’ll be able to have the feeling of “hold all mountains in a single glance”, having a panoramic view of everything when flying in the air.
Actually the general plot of this piece is to express that when you soar high, you are able to overlook everything and see mountains, rivers and people below. You’ll be able to have the feeling of “hold all mountains in a single glance”, having a panoramic view of everything when flying in the air.
Let me tell you
where the inspiration comes from: China has many stories of people cultivating
buddhahood or obtaining the Dao/Tao,
as China’s five thousand year culture is a divine one. There are also many
illusion or magician performances in the west having the similar scene, which is that a person who is doing
meditation starts to float up, and then flying in the air. I remember once in
an evening I had a dream of my own flying up too. It seemed that flying freely
can also be tricky, you have to learn to flick the wind, fanning the air, keep
your balance; and controlling height and speed too.
So this piece is a result of the combination of the above
two inspiring factors. There are 2 sections in the piece. The first part is orchestral
film music style, depicting the following plot: A cultivator sitting cross-legged,
practicing meditation with his eyes closed, lightly ascended up without
realizing. This was also his first time in the air too, so he was actually also
slightly scared when he realized he was flying. Feeling a little bit nervous,
he tried to calm down and gave it a go. He slowly loosed his legs, trying to
flick the air with hands, and carefully tried to climb up. It seemed that he
could soon master it, as the action was a bit more natural. He was then happily
and magically flying in the meditation room. Then he realized that it was not
enough to just fly in the house, he paused a bit, and decided that it was time
for him to fly out reaching the top of the mountains. Surprisingly, he not only
flew over the mountain tops, he momentarily flew passed eaves, roofs, hills,
mountains, mountain tops, and even clouds, etc. Mountains, rivers, grasslands
are all in a panoramic view. That was exactly the feeling of “holding all mountains in a single glance”, also praising the
magnificence of nature.
The second part is still in orchestral format, adding modern
drum beats: It is time to start the journey of real flight. You can glide in
the air, you can also do stunt at low altitude. You can fly high and see far;
you can also flying in mid air to experience the feeling of connecting the sky
and the land; you can fly very low to observe subtle things. It’s like from
heaven to earth, from high to low, from far to near, from macro to micro world;
every level can be easily and freely looked in just a single glance.
At the end of the music, the flying guy calmly went back to
his original place of meditation after this magical journey, slowly descended.
He sat down and closed his eyes. Everything went back to quiet and peace as if
nothing had happened.
Actually flying up is not just referring to the body
ascending, but also referring to the soul ascending as well.
Actually it’s similar from the journey of life point of view
too. I would like to invite you to think about the meaning of “I see not the
true face of Lushan mountain because I am in the mountain”. We stand high and
see far in our life. It’s not referring to these worldly things such as higher social
classes, higher positions and having more wealth, but to see if you could look
at issues from a higher realm when trapped in conflicts, difficulties or contradictions.
We always consider things that we are pursuing hard are important. However,
when you fly up high enough, you could see even people have become so small
just like little ants. When we fly higher, they are even as small as these
microbes, and you cannot see them anymore. Who would care about things that
they don’t see? So no matter what hardships you are facing, they can all be
walked passed, or put down. When your heart flies high above leaving the world,
these worldly things become smaller. You understand every aspects of the
problem in just a simple glance. Even you don’t even feel it anymore! Because
you are not in the problem but outside of it instead. This is what this piece
would like to express.
I hope you like this new piece of mine! And I wish everyone
a Happy Chinese New Year! Happy Year of the Horse!
